40-Hour HAZWOPER

This HAZWOPER course provides 40-hours of training on OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standards. The course satisfies training requirements outlined in OSHA standards 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1926.65, which require workers to complete HAZWOPER training before starting work at an uncontrolled hazardous waste operation.


HAZWOPER training prepares cleanup and emergency response workers to operate safely during a variety of scenarios involving hazardous substances. This training covers policies, practices and procedures that reduce the risk of injury and illness related to harmful exposures on the worksite.

Most workers who are new to uncontrolled hazardous waste or emergency response operations are required to complete 40 hours of HAZWOPER training. This includes general site workers (such as laborers and equipment operators) and on-site management and supervisors. Roles that require this training may include:


  • Equipment operators
  • General laborers
  • Other general site workers
  • On-site management and supervisory personnel


The 40-hour course is designed for workers who face the highest risk of exposure on the job.

Types of Work Covered by HAZWOPER Standards

According to OSHA standards, HAZWOPER training applies to workers and employers involved in five specific types of operations:


  • Uncontrolled hazardous waste cleanup operations required by a government body
  • Corrective actions involving cleanup operations at Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) sites
  • Hazardous waste operations at treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) facilities
  • Operations at non-TSD facilities that generate hazardous waste
  • Emergency response actions involving the potential release of hazardous substances

Course Features

The LAB offers the 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training as both an online course, and an in-person course (by request with limited availability). Both formats meets OSHA's 40-hour HAZWOPER training requirements. The LAB will facilitate group registration and certificate of completion for in-person courses. For the online course, certificates will be automatically issued upon completion.


You can provide a certificate to your employer as proof of your training and download duplicates anytime for your convenience.


Although the online version of this course satisfies OSHA requirements for the education portion of HAZWOPER training requirements, students are also required to complete three days of in-person training led by a trained and experienced supervisor.  


Employers are responsible for providing field training, which includes hands-on experience with PPE and an overview of site-specific safety risks. This can be coordinated using a resource at the LAB or an on-site resource.

This online course satisfies OSHA's 40-hour HAZWOPER training requirement. It is fully narrated and contains interactive exercises and real-world examples. You have an unlimited number of attempts to pass each module quiz and the final exam, which require a score of 70% or higher.

This in-person course  satisfies OSHA's 40-hour HAZWOPER training requirement and includes the  required three days of in-person training led by a trained and experienced supervisor. You have 3 attempts to pass each module quiz and the final exam, which require a score of 70% or higher, without required remediation.

Because employers are responsible for providing field training, which includes hands-on experience with PPE and an overview of site-specific safety risks, the LAB offers employers the option using a resource at the LAB. Attendees to this training must provide a certificate of completion from an accredited  course to be admitted.

Workers who are less likely to encounter hazardous substances above permissible exposure limits require 24 hours of HAZWOPER training. This course is appropriate for those who only occasionally work at HAZWOPER sites.

The 8-Hour HAZWOPER course satisfies OSHA requirements for annual refresher training. This training on HAZWOPER standards is required each year for workers who previously completed a 40-hour or 24-hour HAZWOPER course.
